New Year Dishes (Japanese cooking) おせち料理


We, Japanese, cerebrate new years with special foods.

We use lots of preserved foods such as fishcases, vegetables, and rice cake.

The 2018 is a year of the dog. We made dogs with pieces of fish cake. 戌年なので、犬の飾り切りを載せました。ちくわとインゲンで作る門松も我が家の定番です。

Here are traditional Japanese 3 layer plates for new year dishes. They are called "osechi ryori." おせちはいつもの三段にフルーツ盛りも添えました。

We drink sake from the morning on the new years eve. This special sake has gold flakes in it.

金箔入りのお酒で新年の乾杯。金沢の「福梅」もお正月にいただきます。

This is our first time to make "mochi" (sticky rice cake) at home.

今年初めて、ブレッドメーカーでもちを作ってみました。

We made mochi soup called "zou-ni" as a special new year dish.

この手作りもちを使ってお雑煮を作りました。

These look same but different broths were used. Top with kelp based broth and Bottom with seafood (shrimp) based broth. 2つの違った出汁でとったお汁でお雑煮をいただきました。
